Tey Teodoro caught fire late as Jose Rizal University pulled the rug under Wangs Basketball, 86-77, and clinch a quarterfinals spot in the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup Tuesday at JCSGO Gym in Cubao.
The sweet-shooting guard dropped 17 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter as he captained the Heavy Bombers’ 25-point finishing kick. He also had five rebounds and two assists in the victory.
“He had the right timing when he took charge. Sabi ko sa kanya, with the game on the line, you have to get the ball.
He’s a big time player,” coach Vergel Meneses said of Teodoro.
Jhaps Bautista also added 15 points, Ervin Grospe had 14 markers and three boards, while John Amboludto got 10 points and nine rebounds for JRU.
The Heavy Bombers fought back from a 12-point deficit, 44-32, in the second period as it unleashed a superb second half to swing the momentum to their favor. Teodoro, then, completed the comeback as he fired 15 of the team’s final 15 markers.
JRU (4-4) will now advance to the quarterfinals, completing the post-season cast thanks to its 70-65 win over Batangas (3-5) earlier in the conference, while also eliminating the Batangueños and the Couriers in the process.
Mark Montuano paced Wangs (3-6) with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Rey Publico had 19 markers and eight boards.
Meanwhile CaféFrance seeks to share leadership with idle Cignal when the Bakers take on Racal today at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
Game time is at 5.m. following the 3 p.m. encounter between Tanduay and Blustar.
CaféFrance leaned on another monster game from Rod Ebondo Monday in downing AMA Online Education, 92-83, at the JCSGO Gym in Cubao.
The 6-foot-7 Ebondo scored 29 points and grabbed 18 boards as he outshone AMA’s dynamic duo of Jeron Teng and Juami Tiongson.
The win was CaféFrance’s seventh in eight games, formalizing its entry to the quarterfinals.
The Bakers got the assurance of advancing to the next round following Tanduay’s 86-66 demolition of Batangas.
