Former Senator Leticia Ramos-Shahani, sister of former President Fidel V. Ramos, passed away yesteday morning at the age of 87.
Her daughter, Lila Shahani, Secretary General of the Philippine National Commission to UNESCO, confirmed her mother passed away at 2:40 a.m. following a month-long stay in the intensive care unit (ICU).
In a statement, Lila said: “Bereft and full of grief, but still strangely peaceful in the knowledge that she is now free from all suffering.”
The former senator acquired infections and pneumonia during her confinement. She was supposed to have chemotherapy for her Stage 4 colon cancer, according to ABS-CBN News.
“The Palace is saddened by the news of former senator and career diplomat Leticia Ramos Shahani’s passing this morning,” Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said.
Asingan Police offered a prayer and expressed their heartfelt condolences to the Ramos-Shahani family on the demise of the lady solon who hails from Pangasinan town.
Shahani was elected senator in 1987 where she chaired notable committees namely foreign affairs, education, culture and the arts, and agriculture.
Shahani has three children with the late Indian writer and professor Ranjee. (Genalyn D. Kabiling and Liezle Basa)
