The Land Transportation Office is eyeing the release of the new plastic driver’s license cards by August, an official said Friday.
LTO chief Assistant Secretary Galvante said the agency is about to complete the procedures for the procurement of seven million plastic driver’s license cards that are valid for five years.
“We are now processing those companies who have qualified in our bidding and we’re about to award to which of them will produce the license cards. We hope to start delivering the license cards by August,” Galvante said.
He said they hope to issue the notice of award to the most qualified manufacturer within this month. He did not disclose the qualified bidders and the amount of the supposed procurement.
Galvante said that the procurement will address the backlog in the license cards for drivers who applied or renewed for the new license cards since October 17 last year to those who have yet to avail themselves during the first few months of 2017.
Metro Manila, where demand for license cards is largest, has a backlog of about 150,000 to 200,000 new license cards at present, said Galvante. (Vanne Elaine P. Terrazola)
