The Department of Environment and Natural Resources celebrates Earth Day in the Philippines today with the theme “Environmental and Climate Literacy.”
The DENR, in partnership with the Earth Day Network Inc., leads the annual celebration of the Earth Day with a program at the La Mesa Eco Park in Quezon City starting 6:30 a.m.
A Sandiwang, a worship rite of thanksgiving practiced by diverse religious and cultural groups, will kick off the program as a prayer for the healing of the Earth.
DENR Secretary Gina Lopez will speak in the program as well as Quezon City and EDNP representatives.
After the program, a series of activities such as the “PRO Earth Run 2017: Forest Trail Edition,” bird watching, tree canopy walk, and on-the spot art session will be held at the La Mesa Eco Park. Bands and chorale groups will also be performing.
Elen Basug, chief of the Environmental Education and Information Division of the DENR Environmental Management Bureau, said the agency intensified its drive to ensure that the Filipino youth, especially the students, are environment- and climate-literate. (Vanne Elaine P. Terrazola)
