Suspected “pork barrel” fund scam mastermind businesswoman Janet L. Napoles has formally asked the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division to move her from her current detention facility at the Correctional Institute for Women in Mandaluyong City to the NBI Custodial Center on Taft Ave. in Manila.
The accused made the appeal in a four-page motion filed by her lawyers Stephen David and Nicole Rose Jamilla, citing threats to her life.
Since she has been acquitted in her illegal detention case involving whistleblower Benhur Luy, there is no more basis for her continued confinement at the CIW, according to the motion.
“It is clear that her continuous confinement in CIW has no basis for she is no longer a convicted prisoner by virtue of the Decision of Court of Appeals acquitting her for the crime of Serious Illegal Detention,” the motion read.
Her lawyers stressed that their main concern right now is to move her to a safer facility.
Napoles is fearful for her “life and security” since she can implicate several more government officials with her knowledge of the Priority Development Assistance Fund scam, and she reportedly receives death threats on a daily basis, her lawyers said. (Czarina Nicole O. Ong)
