The number of sextortion victims went up by more than 100 from 56 in 2015 to 192 in 2016, the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group said yesterday.
Victims were mostly women on social media, PNP-ACG spokesman Supt. Jay Guillermo said.
In the first three months of this year, Guillermo said they have received at least 50 complaints across the country.
“Most of the victims were females aging from 15 to 35 years old,” said Guillermo.
Most of the victims were looking for relationships online or have shared nude photos with their partners.
Suspects usually ask sexual favor or money in return for not uploading or sharing the nude photos on social media.
Among the prominent victims is basketball player Kiefer Ravena.
The latest case handled by the ACG was of a third year college student who was victimized by his ex-boyfriend whom she met on Facebook. (Aaron B. Recuenco)
