GOLDEN AGE BUT – This is the golden age of indie cinema, winning awards and recognitions in international filmfests.
Sadly, indies have a very limited market in the country. The local audience would rather watch mainstream films.
Ms. Baby Go of BG Productions, the “ winning-est” indie producer, called a big presscon to hype her films which recently took home a bagful of trophies. She hopes that the local audience will be flocking to cinemas showing those winning indies.

‘AREA’ AT SM – BG’s “Area,” topbilled by Ai-Ai de las Alas and directed by Louie Ignacio, is showing from May 19 to 25 at SM theatres (MOA, Bacoor, Cebu, Iloilo, Megamall, Southmall, Fairview, and North EDSA).
Thanks to “Cine Local,”under the auspices of Liza Dino of FDCP, “Area” and other indies are being exhibited in SM.
Ai-Ai won two international filmfest best actress awards for “Area,” at the 7th Queens’World Film Festival in New York and ASEAN international Film Festival recently held in Cuching, Malaysia.
Direk Louie is best director for “Area” in the ASEAN event.
So there. Lets all support “Area” and all indies for that matter.

OTHER WINNERS – As earlier noted, Ms. Baby Go is on a winning streak. Her other winning indies abroad include “Laut” and “Child Haus, both diercted by Louie Ignacio. Ana Capri was ASEAN best supporting actress for “Laut.”
On the local scene Mel Chionglo’s “Iadya Mo Kami” was a winner in the 15th Gawad Tanglaw. Best actor (Allen Dizon), best supporting actress ( Aiko Melendez ).
At the Gawad Pasado, “Iadya Mo Kami “was best film, best director (Mel Chionglo), best actor (Allen Dizon ), best supporting actress (Aiko Melendez).
By the way Ms.Baby Go plans to go mainstream via a Metro Manila Film Festival entry, granting her film is accepted.
Vilma Santos might just star in it.
But she intends to produce more indies… and win more awards here and abroad. And, hopefully, they will be patronized by the local audience.
