Jose Rizal University drew significant numbers from Toby Agustin and Mark Sicat and stunned reigning NCAA champion Mapua, 85-77, even as defending champion Chiang Kai Shek College finally nailed its first win in the 10th Freego Cup held over the weekend at the Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.
In another impressive all-around show, Agustin tallied 15 points, six boards and three assists in leading the Light Bombers to their third straight win in as many outings in the annual preseason defeat.
Playing minus several key players, the Red Robins absorbed their first defeat after a perfect 3-0 start although five of their players churned out double-double figures.
After four deadlocks and 9 lead changes, the Light Bombers finally pulled away after Agustin and Sicat came through with clutch plays down the stretch as they remained the only unbeaten squad in the 9-team tournament also backed by Smart, Powerhouse and Home Depot.
Jason Celis starred for the defending champions’ 74-66 win over the University of Santo Tomas cagers by producing 26 points, highlighted by perfect 7-of-7 shooting from the free throw area.
Chiang Kai Shek’s win was its first after playing sans key players in its first three games.
In other games, Albert Bordeos and Jim Pedrosa scored 14 points each as La Salle Greenhills evened its record to 2-2 with a 91-66 drubbing of Far Eastern University while Lyceum also picked up its first win in four games by outlasting University of the East, 94-83, through the hot-shooting of JR Barba, Sean Sandoval and Marj de Leon.
