CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro – A 71-year old grandmother who was just waiting for a ride in front of an elementary school was hacked to death by an alleged mentally-disturbed tricycle driver last Tuesday in Barangay Ibaba West.
Superintendent Jonathan P. Paguio, City Police chief identified the victim as Marina D. Rovira, widow, jobless, and a resident of the said barangay.
Investigation disclosed that the victim was just standing in front of Ibaba West Elementary School when the 36-year-old suspect Christopher D. Perez, for no apparent reason, approached Rovira and hacked her several times.
Paguio said bystanders attempted to intervene and prevent Perez from doing further harm.
However, Perez was able to aim at Rovira’s head that led to the gruesome decapitation.
Meantime the suspect also sustained hack wounds and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Oriental Mindoro Provincial Hospital.
Paguio said the suspect was a drug surrenderer during their Oplan Tokhang campaign.
Paguio added that residents in Perez’s area noticed that the suspect seemed disturbed the last few days.
