Former UAAP champion National University needed two extra periods to foil Jose Rizal University, 93-90, and stay unbeaten in the 10th Freego Cup held Tuesday at the Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.
Cyril Gonzales led the Bullpups with 21 points while Rhyyan Amsali and Michael Malonzo scored 20 points each as the Bullpups extended their winning streak to four games while handing the Light Bombers their first defeat in five matches.
NU’s win negated the 35-point show of JRU’s Toby Agustin – the league’s leading scorer.
The Bullpups, out to regain the UAAP crown from the Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraws, also got significant numbers from Winderlich Coyoca and Paul Manalang who combined for 21 points.
Defending champion Chiang Kai Shek College continued its recovery from a 0-3 start by downing the Baby Tamaraws, 97-59, thanks to John Galinato’s inspiring performance that evidently rubbed off on Joshua Tolentino and John Aying.
The win improved Chiang Kai Sek’s record to 2-3 in the tournament also backed by Smart, Powerhouse and Home Depot.
In other games, La Salle Greenhills improved to 3-2 with an 89-62 rout of Lyceum while University of Santo Tomas pulled off a pulsating 77-75 win over University of the East for a 2-2 mark.
The Junior Warriors fell to 1-3.
