Olivarez College’s own version of ‘Big 3’ delivered anew and the Sea Lions rolled to their sixth straight win with a 69-67 victory over rival Centro Escolar University in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) Summer Invitational held recently at the Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.
Jayboy Solis posted 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting while Pruvil Bermudez and Archie Sunga added 16 and 11 points, respectively, as the Sea Lions stayed unbeaten in the preseason tournament for UAAP, NCAA and UCBL teams.
Paul Galinato and Moh Ascano had 19 points each for the Scorpions who dropped to 3-4.
In other games, Diliman College held National University to just one free throw in the opening quarter and scored a 67-57 win, while Jose Rizal University finally picked up its win by surprising College of St. Benilde, 88-79, in the tournament backed by Ever Bilena-Blackwater, Smart, Advanced Solution, Inc. and Manila Bulletin.
Alex Diakhite led the Renzy Bajar-mentored Diliman Blue Dragons with 28 points and 20 boards, including four offensively, as they dominated the Bulldogs right from the start.
Diliman College’s win was its 4th in six games while handing NU its fourth in seven games.
Five players scored in double figures for the Heavy Bombers with Leonardo Esguerra leading the way with 21 points – most of them in the second quarter where they outscored the Blazers 24-13, for a 40-29 halftime lead.
