Sta. Elena got back on the winning track with a 25-17, 25-19, 25-21 drubbing of Army in the men’s division of the Premier Volleyball League men’s tournament yesterday at The Arena in San Juan City.
Putting behind a 4-set defeat to Institito Estetico Manila two weeks ago, the Wrecking Balls came out like a team on a mission, peppering their rivals with variety of shots to even its record to 2-2.
Air Force is still on top with a 4-1 mark then followed by Cignal with a 3-1 record.
Skipper Berlin Paglinawan spearheaded Sta. Elena’s attacks with 13 points highlighted by 12 kills, while Ace Mandani chipped in 11 points including two aces.
Edward Camposano and Kurt Rosete were also instrumental in the team’s victory by contributing 10 points each with the latter posting four blocks.
“Nag-focus kami sa serve at sa block. Kanina gumana. Pag walang serve yung kalaban, nahuhuli namin sa block,” said Sta. Elena Coach Arnold Laniog.
In all, the Wrecking Balls had 10 blocks against Army’s four.
Sta. Elena likewise controlled the offensive department, 43-36.
Also shining for the Wrecking Balls was national pool team member Geuel Asia, who had 30 excellent sets.
Army slipped to 2-3 to tie with Instituto Estetico Manila for fourth to fifth places.
Lemuel Arbasto and Benjaylo Labido paced the losing team with 10 points each.
