Global-Cebu and Ceres-Negros is out to produce the needed result as it intends to forge an all-Filipino finals showdown in the second leg of their respective ASEAN zonal semifinals in the AFC Cup.
The first team that will attempt to secure a spot is Global, which faces Home United in tonight’s 8:30 p.m. duel at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore before Ceres hosts Johor Darul Ta’zim at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.
The fierce rivals in the domestic scene must win the return legs in order to advance to the next phase of Asia’s second-tier club competition.
Global gave away a late equalizer that allowed Home United to salvage a 2-all tie in the first leg at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, and the away goals advantage on aggregate.
Ceres, meanwhile, conceded two goals after taking a 2-1 lead inside 25 minutes, but only needs at least a 1-0 victory to advance. Should that occur, the Busmen will gain advantage despite a 3-all tie on aggregate because of the away goals rule.
No Philippine club has advance past the opening round of the tournament’s knockout stage, with Ceres and Kaya all losing their matches in last year’s round-of-16.
