The Department of Education has postponed the opening of classes in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur on June 5 to ensure the safety of learners.

Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella, during the second Mindanao Hour press briefing in Malacañang yesterday, said Education Secretary Leonor Briones postponed the opening of classes on June 5 in Marawi City and moved it to a later date.

DepEd, in a statement, said Briones promptly convened an emergency meeting with Mindanao DepEd officials in Cagayan de Oro City to assess the current situation in Marawi City.

It added that the opening of classes in eight districts in Lanao del Sur, those nearest to the armed conflict, will also be postponed to ensure the safety of learners and DepEd employees. (Argyll Cyrus B. Geducos)
