African Alex Diakhite put on another stellar performance as streaking Diliman College snapped Olivarez College’s six-game winning run with a 66-55 win in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) Summer Invitational held Tuesday at the Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.
The 6-foot-7 Diakhite used his height and heft advantage to the hilt to score 34 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Blue Dragons posted its third straight win and fifth overall in seven games.
A native of Gabon in Central Africa, Diakhite was at his best in the first half that saw the Rensy Bajar-mentored Diliman College take a 36-22 advantage.
Supported by former Sen. Nikki Coseteng, Diliman College needs to hurdle its two remaining games and hopes that Olivarez falter once again to secure the top spot.
The No. 1 seed after the double-round elims enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage in the one-game match for the title against the No. 2 team.
Meantime, National University posted its fourth win in eight games by downing College of St. Benilde, 92-85, in the tournament backed by Ever Bilena-Blackwater, Smart, Advanced Solution, Inc. and Manila Bulletin.
John Clemente fired 15 points to lead five NU players in double figures while Matt Johnson and RR Pagulayan paced the Blazers with 19 and 16 points, respectively.
