The Department of Education has allowed 1,013 private elementary and secondary schools nationwide to increase tuition for the school year 2017-2018.

“Schools who were approved for the tuition fee hike had undergone steps to ensure that the increase is reasonable and in accordance with DepEd guidelines which states that 70 percent of the increase must go to teachers’ salaries,” Education Secretary Leonor Briones said during the 2017 “Oplan: Balik Eskwela” Inter-agency Command Conference at the DepEd Central Office in Pasig City yesterday.

The increase, she noted, will make the salaries of teachers in private schools at par with public school teachers.

Metro Manila had the highest number of private schools that were allowed to increase tuition at 183, followed by Region 11(Davao) with 154, and Region 3 (Central Luzon) with 104. (Ina Hernando Malipot)
