James Mangahas and Robby Celiz ended the misery of rookie team Zark’s Burgers yesterday after rolling past AMA Online Education, 109-91, in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Mangahas finished with 26 points, 14 rebounds and two assists while Celiz had 25 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Jawbreakers, who barged into the win column after starting the conference with three straight defeats.
“Masaya ako kasi nawala na yung jinx. For me, relief ito,” said Zark’s coach Jade Padrigao, who also won his first D-League game after going winless in his maiden stint with Topstar ZC Mindanao in last year’s Foundation Cup.
Mangahas sparked Zark’s second quarter surge to take a 55-45 halftime lead, before Celiz scored 12 in the third period to beat AMA in a matchup between two winless squads.
Ivan Villanueva had 29 points and 15 rebounds but AMA dropped to 0-3.
In the second game, Tanduay benefited from a foul before the inbound with 3.1 seconds left and escaped past Marinerong Pilipino, 76-74.
Lester Alvarez broke a 74-all tie after Marinerong’s John Lopez, who in the previous possession tied the game on an undergoal stab, committed a foul before Tanduay was able to complete the inbound pass.
Jaymo Eguilos split both free throws, missing the second try, before Marinerong’s Julian Sargent missed a Hail Mary at the buzzer, giving Tanduay a 2-1 record.
