Pageant fans gave mixed reactions to the Miss Philippines Earth 2017 beauty pageant swimsuit competition held in Pasig City last Thursday night after the 40 contestants paraded in two-piece swimwear but their faces were all veiled.
Carousel Productions, organizers of the pageant, said that the unusual swimsuit competition dubbed Beauty of Figure would only focus on the contestants curves, execution and pose. Next week, the preliminary show would judge beauty of face and poise; and intelligence category.
“The scores of the candidates in the three preliminary shows and other pre-pageant activities will be added up to choose the Top 12 semifinalists for this year’s pageant,” organizers said.
The Miss Philippines Earth 2017 preliminary show has two firsts: it’s the first time that the preliminaries of a major beauty pageant would be open to the public and media and the contestants paraded in swimsuits with veiled faces.
Norman Tinio, world’s most popular pageant blogger, commented about the preliminary pageant in his widely read blog normannorman.com.
“Reviews were mixed as some quarters did not particularly liked the implication of faceless bodies being assessed.
“There were comments that stated opposition since the entire judging should really complete the look – face/body, confidence and physical fitness. I was also taken aback by the novel idea.
“It wasn’t easy covering the event where faces are covered. Someone even joked that the ladies appeared like going for a swim but got lost along the way and ended up attending a wake instead.
“A bad quip really, but it can’t really be helped because even the press photographers got uneasy taking good pictures when the faces could not be properly matched with the figures,” said Tinio.
The coronation night of the Miss Philippines Earth 2017 beauty pageant will be held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on July 15.
