It was a surprise for many when ABS-CBN star Liza Soberano, poised to play the iconic role of Darna from the Mars Ravelo comics of the same name, was seen on the 2nd day of Toycon at the SMX Convention Center at SM Mall of Asia.
The 19-year old actress was there to promote her new role as the powerful Filipina who saves the country from evil.
Soberano graced the ribbon cutting that formally opened the three-day convention. She then went on stage and was given a framed comic page of “Darna” and a flash drive containing all the “Darna” comics by the Ravelo family.
“I hope you will be able to internalize the role even more with these small token from us and on behalf of Mars Ravelo” said the Ravelo family.
The role of Darna has become legendary in Philippine entertainment. There have been 13 actresses who took on the role since it was first made to film in the 1950’s. Rosa del Rosario was the first to play the legendary role. Vilma Santos reprised the role a total of five times from 1973 to 1980 and now Liza will be the 14th actress to play Darna in the franchise.
Liza says that she is now more excited for her new role as Darna. “Now that I see the statue and all the merchandise, excited na din ako makapag-shoot and we are all waiting for the big reveal of the costume.”
SUPPORT FROM FANS
Fans of the star have shown their support for Liza.
Twenty-five lucky fans were able to meet her in person during the toy convention.
“I’m very thankful of course, malaking bagay na nangagaling sa kanila na approved na sila na ako ang magiging next Darna.
“It’s just overwhelming that they are congratulating me and rooting for me.”
Liza Soberano rose to stardom after starring in her breakout television show “Forevermore” with Enrique Gil. She has since then starred in blockbuster movies and has been featured on local and international magazines.
