Centro Escolar University bucked a slow start and trounced Marinerong Pilipino, 70-57, last night for its fourth straight victory in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Eighteen-year-old point guard Orlan Wamar hit five triples on his way to 16 points while Congolese center Rod Ebondo once again dominated the shaded lane for 13 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks as the Scorpions tightened their grip on fifth spot in the standings after starting the tournament with back-to-back losses.
Wamar, who was named UCBL Finals Most Valuable Player last year, hit two triples in the fourth, the last giving CEU a commanding 68-49 lead with 5:48 to go in the contest.
The victory was a big boost for the Scorpions who will have a stretch of difficult games beginning next week starting with unbeaten Flying V, a challenge coach Yong Garcia hopes his players would hurdle.
“May tendency talaga na nagrerelax kaya kailangan mas aggressive kami against our opponent,” said Garcia.
Christian Uri was the other CEU player in double figures with 11 points.
Achie Inigo finished with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals but Marinerong Pilipino fell to 1-4.
Earlier, AMA Online Education barged into the win column after a 0-5 start by escaping past Gamboa Coffee, 67-66.
Embons Bonleon hit the go-ahead free throw off a foul by Gamboa playing coach Leo Avenido with 8.3 seconds left before Daniel Salonga intercepted a pass intended for Mark Montuano to end the Titans’ dryspell.
