Wangs Basketball leaned on another hot start before dismantling AMA Online Education, 110-85, yesterday to enhance its quarterfinals bid in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Fil-American Robbie Herndon fired 23 points on 8-of-19 shooting with 13 rebounds and three assists as the Couriers took charge midway in the first quarter on their way to posting their second straight lopsided victory.
John Montemayor, John Ambuludto and Michael Juico added 12 points apiece to help Wangs improve to 5-3 to tighten its grip on sixth place in the 11-team tournament.
“Nag-work hard yung mga players, especially on defense, plus good offensive execution. Yun ang nagdala sa amin sa panalo,” said Wangs coach Pablo Lucas.
The Couriers’ win, a follow-up to last week’s 133-92 thrashing of the Zark’s Burgers Jawbreakers, came before they play back-to-back games next week against the Tanduay Rhum Masters and Marinerong Pilipino Skippers which could determine their fate.
Herndon scored nine points in the opening period that saw Wangs taking a 30-11 lead. AMA narrowed the gap to six, 52-46, on a jumper by JC Asuncion with 7:46 left in the third, only to be outscored, 29-11, by the Couriers by the end of the same quarter.
