Lyceum leaned anew on CJ Perez’s heroics as the Pirates outlasted the San Sebastian Stags, 78-73, yesterday in the 93rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Perez, a transferee from Ateneo, fired 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field to steer the squad to its third straight win in as many games.
He was the only player this season to score at least 20 points in all his three games so far, while collaring five rebounds and dishing off three assists and two steals.
He was ably supported by Jasper Ayaay and Mike Nzeusseu who scored 17 and 10 points, respectively, with the 6-foot-6 Nzeusseu also posting 13 boards and one block.
San Sebastian dropped to 1-2 despite Michael Calisaan’s huge numbers of 28 points and 12 rebounds.
Earlier, San Beda leaned on a strong third quarter performance and dismantled Emilio Aguinaldo College, 81-69.
Sweet-shooting Davon Potts, Clint Doliguez and Jomari Presbiterio spearheaded the Red Lions in outscoring the Generals, 24-11, in that period to turn a slim 38-32 halftime lead to a 62-43 cushion which they valiantly protected.
It was San Beda’s second straight win since its shock defeat to Lyceum last week, thus improving its record to 3-1.
While it was Presbiterio who led the Lions in scoring with 16 points, two SBC players – Donald Tankou and Robert Bolick – nearly posted double-double.
Tankoua had 12 points and nine rebounds, while Bolick posted 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists in another brilliant all-around performance.
In the other game, Jed Mendoza tallied 17 points and seven rebounds while Teytey Teodoro and Gio Lasquety added 14 and 10 points, respectively, as Jose Rizal University edged Letran, 65-62.
