University of Santo Tomas showed its prowess anew as it cruised to a 25-17, 25-13, 25-22 win over De La Salle yesterday to grab the early lead in the men’s division of the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Tigers clobbered the Archers with an offensive barrage spearheaded by Joshua Umandal to follow up their opening day victory over the University of the Philippines Maroons.
Umandal paced UST with 14 points, all coming from the attack line, and got help from Arnold Bautista and Jayvee Sumagaysay, who chipped in with nine points each.
Bautista, particularly, stepped up with eight kills, while Sumagaysay took charge of the net by swatting away four of the team’s 10 blocks.
So dominant were the Tigers that they disposed of the Archers inside 65 minutes and only committed 16 errors.
La Salle, which dropped to 0-2, failed to deliver with the right combinations despite veteran Cris Dumago scoring 14 points.
Meanwhile, UP squeaked past defending NCAA champion College of St. Benilde with a hard-fought 25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 21-25, 16-14 triumph for 1-1.
Sticking to his starters throughout the one hour, 46-minute match, UP coach Rodrigo Palmero saw Wendel Miguel dominating with 22 points.
Nicolo Consuelo also starred for the Maroons with 19 points on 15 kills, three blocks and an ace, while Jerry San Pedro and Matthew Gahoc added 16 and 10 points, respectively.
