University of the Philippines survived an opening set scare and beat Technological University of the Philippines, 25-20, 25-9, 25-13, in the women’s division of the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan City.
The win was the first for the Lady Maroons who absorbed a shock five-set loss to the Adamson Lady Falcons in Group B.
Diana Carlos paced UP with 14 points highlighted by 11 kills while Isa Molde chipped in 12 points, including six service aces.
The Lady Maroons were so hot they limited the Lady Engineers to just two attack points in the second frame.
Meantime, De La Salle recovered its form just in time and stunned former UAAP champion National University, 31-29, 25-23, 20-25, 19-25, 15-6, in the men’s division.
After taking the first two sets, the Archers appeared headed for a collapse when they lost the next two frames.
But Arjay Onia and Raymark Woo came to La Salle’s rescue, coming through with huge spikes to stave off the team’s meltdown.
Onia was almost unstoppable, firing 18 kills to finish with 21 points while Woo produced 12 hits and three aces for 15 points as the Archers evened their record to 2-2.
In the other men’s game, San Beda picked up its first triumph in three outings by trouncing University of the Philippines, 25-22, 25-22, 25-19.
