University of Santo Tomas turned back Adamson, 88-65, yesterday to stay in solo second spot in the UAAP Season 80 women’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Anjel Anies fired 10 of her game-high 22 points in the third canto while Bets Peñaflor and Sai Larosa came up with double-double performances as the Tigresses racked up their seventh win after eight starts, half-a-game behind three-time defending champion National University.
“We made a big run in the third quarter. That gave us the momentum going to the fourth quarter and the girls never let up,” said UST coach Haydee Ong, who got a combined 27 points and 24 rebounds from Peñaflor and Larosa.
Nathalia Prado collected 13 points and 11 rebounds while Jamie Alcoy, despite a horrendous 6-of-19 shooting from the field, had a team-high 15 points for the Lady Falcons, who dropped to fifth spot with a 3-5 mark, but not after giving the Tigresses a big scare.
Adamson proved a tough nut to crack majority of the way and even pulled within 62-61 off an Alcoy bucket with six minutes left to play.
But UST responded in a big way, with Larosa capping their 11 straight points with a triple before coming up with another pair to give them a whopping 18-point lead going to the final two minutes.
“Larosa got into early foul trouble so I had to sit her down. I just reminded her to relax when you go in and just play your game,” said Ong of Larosa who also added three assists and two steals. (Jerome Lagunzad)
