Calling herself “Batang Kamuning”, Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno went a trip down memory lane when she attended the World Pandesal Day afternoon forum held at the Kamuning Bakery Monday in Quezon City.
The Supreme Court chief justice recounted her childhood memories with former schoolmates, teachers, and neighbors and how pandesal became an essential part of her daily breakfast as a student at nearby Quezon City High School.
Sereno revealed how she enjoyed pugon-baked pandesal, pan de coco, and Spanish breads at the now 78-year-old bakery.
Sereno, who is being threatened of impeachment raps, connected the concept of fairness to the Philippines’ favorite bread, Pandesal.
“If bread is so important to all people, what more is justice?” the chief justice said.
She added that the poor have always been enjoying Pandesal, just as how they were very sensitive to injustice.
Meanwhile, Sereno’s impeachment spokesperson, lawyer Winnie Salumbides said that Sereno is slightly preparing on the next hearing since she also needs to focus on leading the Supreme Court.

“Management of the doctrines of the Supreme Court, pangunahan ang ating hudikatura, iyon pa rin ang kanyang pangunahing pinagtutuunan ng atensyon,” Salumbides said.
He also said that the chief justice is not really worried on the results of its trust ratings ang surveys as she is not a politician.
The House justice committe has earlier approved impeachment raps against Sereno.
The complaint, which was filed by Lawyer Lorenzo Gadon, received a vote of 25-2 from the panel after meeting the requirements of sufficiency of grounds under House impeachment rules.
