Gospel Reading: Lk 13:18-21
Jesus said, “What is the Kingdom of God like? To what can I compare it? It is like a mustard seed that a person took and planted in the garden. When it was fully grown, it became a large bush and the ‘birds of the sky dwelt in its branches.’ ”
Again he said, “To what shall I compare the Kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch of dough was leavened.”
REFLECTION
Like a mustard seed… Like yeast
These two parables illustrate how the Kingdom can grow in surprising ways! It may start as a very tiny “seed” or a pinch of “yeast,” but, lo and behold, it is able to grow to unimaginable size or magnitude!
We often see this working from day to day. We show a person what people usually consider as a “normal” or “tiny” act of kindness, only to be surprised by how that small act has touched or even changed that person.
It happened once when I was in a rather busy counter in a department store where we would expect the clerk to be simply mechanically rushing through her job, but this clerk had time to greet me and thank me as a customer! That led me to raise my eyes heavenward and thank God and pray for this person.
“Little deeds of kindness, little words of love, help to make Earth happy like our heaven above”
