BOTH – An idol is not necessarily a long-lasting figure. One can be an idol – be it singing or acting or whatever – for only a few months. Or perhaps a year or so. There are many overnight sensations who disappear from the limelight in no time.
An icon is one who’s long-lasting, has stood the test of time. Durability is the name of the game.
With those definitions in mind, Rico J. Puno is most certainly both idol and icon.
Rico J’s singer, recording and concert artist, TV-Movie actor. Not to say Makati councilor. And he’s still around.
Truly a Total Entertainer.

TRIBUTE – Come December 2, at 8 p.m. There’s an event titled:
“Tatak Rico J.: A Tribute to 40 Years of the Total Entertainer.”
Venue is The Theatre at Solaire Resort and Casino, with many guest artists – all of them friends – joining the Tribute. They include Willie Revillame, Ogie Alcasid, Randy Santiago, Imelda Papin, Claire de la Fuente, Glock 9, and Ms. Ai-Ai de las Alas. The guest list is by no means complete as more big and bright names have voluntered to be part of Tribute.
Will the number reach 40 or even more? Colleague Jun Lalin says, “In all probability.”

NIGHT OF – The Tribute will be a night of music and laughter, with Rico J. dishing out those riotous joke…some of them green.
It’ll also be a night of nostalgia. Think of such Rico J. hits as “May Bukas Pa,” “Macho Guapito,” “Kapalaran,” “Together Forever,” and the Tagalized version of “The Way We Were.”
Expect the senior citizens of Makati to troop to Solaire. Rico J.’s daughter Tosca (yes, named after the opera) says that being a senior citizen himself, “Mayora” (Makati Mayor Abby Binay) asked the councilor to take care of the seniors’ needs. And how they love him.
By the way, Tosca served as Makati councilor for three terms (nine years).
