Filipino champion Jerwin Ancajas dealt Jamie Conlan of Northern Ireland a one-sided beating en route to a sixth-round stoppage in their International Boxing Federation (IBF) super-flyweight title fight held early yesterday morning at the SSE Arena in Belfast.
Ancajas, making the third defense of the IBF 115-lb crown he won last year, knocked down Conlan four times, including thrice in the first four frames, forcing referee Steve Gray of England to call a mercy halt.
“Ancajas showed his class from the start,” according to the Irish Sun.
While Conlan displayed courage in the entire fight, he was simply overwhelmed by the southpaw Ancajas, who boosted his record to 28-1-1 with 19 KOs, his third straight abbreviated victory.
Conlan, who dropped to 19-1 with 11 K0s, “could not compete with the champion’s accuracy and power,” noted Sky Sports.
After winnign the title from McJoe Arroyo of Puerto Rico in Taguig, Ancajas beat Jose Alfredo Rodriguez of Mexico in Macau in January and defeated Teiru Nikoshita of Japan last July in Brisbane, Australia.
Team Ancajas arrives in Manila at 7:45 pm tonight on board a Philippine Airlines jet from London Heathrow after taking a British Airways plane from Belfast. (Nick Giongco)
