Only gold and silver medalists in the last Southeast Asian Games are assured of spots in the Philippine contingent to the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.
Julian Camacho, chief of mission to the 2018 Asiad, told the Bulletin-Tempo yesterday that he had no options “but to enforce stricter requirements.”
“Remember that the Asian Games is a different level and world powers like China, Japan and Korea and the former Soviet republics are represented,” said Camacho, also the Philippine Olympic Committee treasurer.
In the past, athletes who also took a bronze from the lowly SEAG were given automatic berths to the Asian Games.
“Not anymore,” said Camacho, who is nonetheless opening slots to athletes who weren’t able to medal in the Kuala Lumpur SEAG provided they fare well in Asian-level events in the coming months.
