A VISIT to Bohol last September reacquainted us with the Philippine Tarsier, known locally as maomag.
We were happy to set foot at the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary where tarsiers are protected.
Tarsiers are nocturnal. They have eyes larger than their brains. Their heads can turn 360 degrees to make up for their eyeballs that cannot move.
They have long tarsal bone, hence the name tarsier. They are considered threatened species.

There we met the so-called Tarsier Man, Carlito Pizzaras. Pizzaras manages and take care of the tarsiers in the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary located in Corella, Bohol.
Pizzaras shared that he inherited his love for tarsiers, and other animals, from his father, who was a taxidermist.
When he learned how to care of tarsiers, he told his father not to hunt tarsier anymore which made his father mad at him.
Pizzaras shared that he wanted to pass his commitment of protecting the tarsiers to his children and grandchildren.
He said that the tarsiers should be taken care of and that everyone has a responsibility to these animals.

TRIVIA PA MORE: Excerpts from the very useful book “Living With Folk Wisdom” by Abercio V. Rotor, Ph.D.
Pineapple sucker or crown – plant them deep enough with care that soil and water do not reach the axis of the young leaves and bud.
•
Corn – kernels are dropped at the bottom of the fresh furrow, covered with topsoil and packed with the foot.
•
Rice – for upland planting, the same procedure with that of corn is followed. When planting on seed plot, the plot must be first saturated with water, and then drained before broadcasting the seeds. Apply pulverized soil thinly on the planted seedbed to insure good foothold.
•
Ampalaya, cucumber, and most large seeded vegetables – the depth of planting is around 2 to 3 inches. Too deep planting deprives the seed from oxygen, or blocks the germinating seed from emerging and start photosynthesis.
