Businessman-sportsman Rudy Yu of Dickies Underwear has been named as chairman of the Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship (PSSBC) as the league prepares in earnest the staging of its sixth edition starting on Dec. 17.
The tournament dubbed as Battle of Champions will be a short one but Yu, a former member of the varsity team of University of Santo Tomas in the 80s, believes the event will serve its purpose well owing to the number of players it helped discover and nurture in the past.
“We are staging this event every year as part of our mission and this will mark our 6th year to help these young players fulfill their dreams,” said the 56-year-old Yu. “We should help them prepare for bigger battles ahead.”
Yu, who is the vice president for operations of Dickies Underwear, also sees the event as a window of opportunity for the young turks as coaches will be there to scout for the best talents available.
“A lot of coaches and agents have been watching our games in the past so I believe this will be another avenue for them to pursue their dream to play in major collegiate leagues,” added Yu, who replaced Leoncio Chua of MEC Networks.
Other members of the board are Jumbo Plastic Linoleum big boss Jimmy dela Cruz, Cecilio Pedro of Hapee Toothpaste, Dioceldo Sy of Blackwater, Terry Que of Rain or Shine, Jimi Lim of Ironcon Buildders, and Eduard Tio of Freego.
Aside from the teams from UAAP, NCAA and Filipino Chinese Athletic Amateur Federation, the Board is set to invite a champion team from Cebu to make the event more interesting.
As chair of the board, Dickies Underwear will be tournament’s title sponsor.
