Gospel Reading: Lk 21:34-36
Jesus said to his disciples: “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap. For that day will assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth. Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.”
BEWARE THAT YOUR HEARTS DO NOT BECOME DROWSY
The Gospel rightly reminds us to be mindful that the Lord can come back any time. Thus, there is no room for complacency and indulgence in earthly pleasures. The proper attitude of a disciple of Christ is one of vigilance and discernment and sobriety.
The Gospel also reminds us to pray always so that we may have enough strength to withstand what happens when the day comes – for it will come with scary signs – and so that we may be ready to see God face to face. Remember, we shall all appear before God to give an account of our lives.
Let us cultivate a discerning and wise stance while waiting for the Lord’s return.
