FATHERS OF BEAUTY QUEENS: Christopher de Leon and Joey Marquez are both proud parents of beauty queens.
Boyet’s daughter, Mariel, represented the country in the 2017 Miss International pageant held in Japan recently. She lost but now is on her way to becoming an actor just like her parents. Mariel makes her film debut as leading lady to Coco Martin in another re-telling of classic story “Ang Panday,” an entry to this year’s MMFF.
Coco is all praise for Mariel, whom he described as a good actress.
Joey Marquez is the proud father (with Alma Moreno as mother) of Teresita Marquez, winner of the 2017 Reina Hispanoamericana pageant held recently in Bolivia. Teresita used to be known as Winwyn, but she has dropped her nickname in favor of the more professional and formal sounding Teresita, by which she was known in Bolivia and the rest of Latin America.

BEAUTY QUEENS IN FILMS: By the way, beauty queens are back being tapped as actors in movies. Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Maxine Medina recently debuted on the big screen in the screamer “Spirit of the Glass 2.” Kylie Versoza also makes her debut in “Ang Panday.”
By far, the most successful beauty queen who ventured into movies is Gloria Diaz, the country’s first Miss Universe in 1969. Gloria evolved from being sex symbol to effective comedienne and then a sensitive drama actress.
Here’s hoping today’s beauty queens can follow in Gloria’s footsteps and not just become flashes in the pan like many other beauty queens before them.

ASIANS AS BEAUTY QUEENS: A former classmate, Philip Lim, sent this comment on beauty pageants of late.
Philip says: “May i submit a trivia which i observed as i read the news about this year’s batch of winners of international beauty pageants. the trivia is: ASIANS DOMINATED THE WINNERS as follows: Miss Globe(Vietnam); Miss International (Indonesia);Miss Earth(Philippines); Miss Supranational(Korea);Miss World(India). Only the Miss Universe deviated from the trend but the winner, South Africa, came from the Africa/Asia-Pacific group. Hope you find this trivia useful to the current interest about beauty pageants.”
