Gospel Reading: Jn 5:33-36
Jesus said to the Jews, “You sent emissaries to John, and he testified to the truth. I do not accept testimony from a human being, but I say this so that you may be saved. He was a burning and shining lamp, and for a while you were content to rejoice in his light. But I have testimony greater than John’s. The works that the Father gave me to accomplish, these works that I perform testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me.”
Reflection
YOU WERE CONTENT TO REJOICE IN HIS LIGHT
On the one hand, Jesus praises the Jews for rejoicing in John’s light. John is indeed a true witness to the truth.
But, on the other hand, Jesus wants them to know his testimony is greater than John’s because the works that Jesus is doing are his testimony.
In life, we are presented with many role models or exemplars. We idolize world heroes; we follow entertainment and sports stars; we live by the tenets of great thinkers. But, in the end, Jesus wants us to look at him as the greatest of these “witnesses,” because he witnesses as the only Son of the Father.
Whom do we adore as heroes in life?
Which actors/actresses do we so idolize that we never miss seeing their movies or TV shows? Do we “idolize” Jesus in the same way, at the very least?
