Six people, including a television reporter, were injured in a six-vehicle smashup after one of the cars encountered engine trouble on Shaw Boulevard underpass along Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) Thursday afternoon.
ABS-CBN TV reporter Doris Bigornia and one of her news crew, Marco Gutierrez, suffered minor injuries on the head and body. Both were rushed to the Medical City in Pasig City.
The duo were onboard their media vehicle when the accident happened at 1:45 pm on EDSA corner Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong City.
Four other victims also sustained minor head and body injuries.
Other involved vehicles were two Montero Sports Utility Van, a grab Toyota Vios, Mitsubishi Mirage, and a motorcycle.
Bong Nebrija, Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) operations supervisor, said Bigornia and her crew were on their way to cover the agency’s clearing operation in Cubao, Quezon City.
The accident caused horrendous traffic along the stretch of Edsa-northbound lane for several hours, affecting southern parts of the metropolis.
“The traffic situation on the southbound is from Kamuning Street in Quezon City while the northbound traffic is all the way to Ayala Avenue in Makati City,” Nebrija said.
Based on initial investigation, Nebrija said the multiple car collision happened after a Montero sports utility vehicle suddenly accelerated.
He said the MMDA was in close coordination with the Eastern Police District – Traffic Management Office that would conduct an investigation on the accident.
“Investigation is still ongoing. Passengers have been rushed to hospital,” said Nebrija.
