Gospel Reading: Mt 11:16-19
Mary said: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior, for he has looked upon his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed; the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, and has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever.”
Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months/ and then returned to her home.
Reflection
THE ALMIGHTY HAS DONE GREAT THINGS FOR ME
Mary’s Magnificat is at once a joyful song of praise and a serious reminder.
Mary’s heart sings of God and his wondrous works. She praises God for her personally who is merely a lowly handmaid but is now greatly favored. She glorifies the Almighty also for her own people, Israel, the object of God’s love and beautiful promises, especially that of a Savior.
Mary’s canticle is also a serious warning and reminder for those who desire to thwart God’s plans, especially the mighty of this world. For God will always be on the side of the weak and the poor.
What great things has God done for us, for our community? Have we boldly proclaimed them for others
to rejoice over and glorify God?
