A leading Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) official yesterday believes he has the solution to the leadership crisis gripping the POC and its faltering relations with those calling for reforms.
But he is unsure whether his solution can resolve the problem facing POC president Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco and boxing chief Ricky Vargas, who has assumed the role of gamechanger among parties seeking Cojuangco’s ouster.
“The best this to do now is for the two camps to sit down and talk,” said POC secretary general Steve Hontiveros, staunch supporter of the 82-year-old Cojuangco.
A few weeks ago, a Pasig court issued a ruling calling for the POC to hold an election for the positions of president and chairman after deciding that the elections in November 2016 that gave Cojuangco a fourth term was null and void.
Vargas is keeping his fingers crossed that the POC will abide by the court’s decision although Cojuangco doesn’t seem bothered at all.
Cojuangco said the rules applied in the disqualification of Vargas owing to a technicality has the backing of the International Olympic Committee.
“Our bylaws were approved by the IOC,” said Cojuangco.
