An influential sports leader yesterday backed call for the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) to go through with the election of president and chairman as ordered by a Pasig court on Feb. 23.
“There is a clamor to hold an election,” said Makati Rep. Monsour del Rosario, also the secretary-general of the Philippine Taekwondo Association.
The POC’s election of Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco during the November 2016 elections was ‘null and void,’ according to the court.
Del Rosario, also appointed as chief of mission of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games the country is hosting, bared his choice for POC head should the POC abide by the ruling: boxing chief Ricky Vargas.
The MVP Sports Foundation, the group Vargas leads alongside Manny V. Pangilinan, is a staunch supporter of taekwondo.
Robert Bachmann of squash, a close ally of Del Rosario, echoed the statement. “It’s the only solution,” said Bachmann.
But Bachmann insists that whatever happens with the elections, the result should be respected.
“(But) we unite under him (Cojuangco) if he wins,” added Bachmann.
The MVPSF also supports and provides solid financial assistance to marquee sports basketball and boxing as well as badminton, weightlifting, tennis, cycling, football and rugby.
Only a TRO can prevent the holding of the election, something the POC can resort to in its effort to counter the court order.
