College of St. Benilde recovered from a sluggish start and beat undermanned Lyceum, 22-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-13, 15-10, yesterday in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Lady Blazers were erratic in the first two sets but turned on the heat in the next three frames for their second straight win, tying Arellano and San Beda for the early lead.
The SBC belles pulled off a tough 28-26, 25-18, 29-27 win over the Perpetual Lady Altas.
The Red Spikers banked on Nieza Viray and Cesca Racraquin, who pumped in 20 and 13 points, respectively.
The Lady Altas dropped to 1-1.
Arnold Laniog, St. Benilde’s freshman coach, blamed their lack of focus early in the match particularly in the first set, where they committed 16 of their 41 errors.
“It’s more on mental for us, yung naging problema,” said Laniog. “ Makikita mo sa facial reactions nila na ‘Ano na, anong gagawin natin?’ Ako na lang nag-adjust sa kanila, i-motivate sila dun sa mga situations na kailangan.”
St. Benilde broke a 4-4 count in the third and raced to a commanding 11-6 advantage which they protected to turn the complexion of the game in their favor.
