Defending champion Arellano University remained perfect in four games after beating Jose Rizal University in four sets, 25-11, 22-25, 25-18, 25-16, in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Lady Chiefs took the first set easily but relaxed a bit in the next frame that allowed the Lady Bombers to knot the game 1-set all.
But it proved to be JRU’s last hurrah as the reigning titlist dominated the next two sets to stay unbeaten.
Regine Arocha paced Arellano with 20 points built on 14 kills and five aces while skipper Mary Anne Esguerra and Necole Ebuen helped with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Arellano coach Obet Javier, however, was not pleased with their win.
“Meron pa rin kaming tendency na kapag nakakakuha kami ng isang set, nagre-relax kaagad kami. Yun yung number one na kailangan naming baguhin,” said Javier, referring to their second-set performance.
“Pina-realize ko lang sa kanila na hindi namin kailangang maliitin yung JRU kasi nag-i-improve yang team na yan eh.
Tinanong ko sa kanila, ‘Ano ba talaga ang target natin?’” added Javier, admitting that they aim to sweep the single-round robin eliminations.
