San Beda went to Ces Racraquin and Nieza Viray in the crunch and avoided an upset ax with a 22-25, 19-25, 25-11, 25-17, 15-7 win over Lyceum yesterday to gain a semis playoff in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
After losing the first two sets, the SBC belles regrouped and produced one big shot after another to register their toughest win so far in six games.
Racraquin exploded for 26 points on 20 kills and six aces while Viray added 10 points for San Beda.
Meanwhile, Jose Rizal University bolstered its Final Four bid yesterday as it stunned perennial title contender College of St. Benilde, 25-21, 25-22, 25-21.
The Lady Bombers, who have never been into the semifinals since 2008, banked on Shola Alvarez and Dolly Verzosa to even their win-loss record at 3-3, tying their victims for fifth to sixth places.
The hard-hitting Alvarez led the Lady Bombers with 21 points, 20 coming from kills, including a huge spike that sealed the victory.
In men’s action, defending champion College of St. Benilde also hammered down JRU, 25-16, 25-17, 25-20.
