Nearly a hundred individuals got infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in November after engaging in transactional sex.
According to the latest HIV and AIDS Registry of the Philippines (HARP) report, 96 of the total cases recorded in November were due to transactional sex.
“People who engage in transactional sex are those who report that they pay for sex, regularly accept payment for sex, or do both,” the report said.
A total of 42 males got infected with HIV after they paid for sex.
On the other hand, 36 individuals — 35 males and one female — acquired HIV after accepting payment for sex.
Meanwhile, 16 males and two females were infected with HIV after engaging in doing both types of transactional sex.
As of November last year, 1,020 individuals have acquired HIV in 2017 through transactional sex.(Charina Clarisse L. Echaluce)
