Sometimes, it’s more than just a bad day. Sometimes, there’s something more to that mood swing you chose to ignore or that sudden lack of interest in things you used to love.
Depression is a medical illness being silently battled by thousands of people. It affects the way you think or act in more negative ways than one can imagine. The tragedy is that people often choose to dismiss this condition.
“It can happen to anyone,” MediCard president Dr. Nick Montoya said in an interview.
He stresses the importance of identifying its symptoms for people to be able to seek help in case they, or their loved ones, may be exhibiting its signs.
Depression manifests itself through several symptoms. One of its primary signs is fatigue. People diagnosed with depression often find themselves lethargic thus leading them to feel detachment towards former hobbies or activities they once enjoyed. The fatigue can also sometimes lead to days wherein one finds it difficult to get out of bed or even take care of oneself.
Another warning sign is sudden weight change. A shift in appetite is common among people suffering from depression. Some resort to eating more while others opt to not eat at all.
One of the sure ways to know if the weight loss or gain is a sign of the illness is to know if the change was deliberate. If it wasn’t, it is likely that the change was an effect of depression.
