Far Eastern University rose from a two-point deficit in the deciding set as it outplayed fancied Ateneo, 19-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 15-9, yesterday in the UAAP women’s volleyball at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Down 9-7, the Lady Tamaraws took advantage of the Lady Eagles’ shaky plays to score eight straight points en route to the impressive win.
Highlighting that imposing run was three straight aces from Toni Rose Basas to give FEU the 12-9 lead.
Basas, along with Bernadeth Pons, finished with 14 points each while Celine Domingo added 10 points for the Lady Tamaraws.
Also pulling off a shocker were the FEU Tamaraws, who surprised three-time defending champion Ateneo Blue Eagles, 25-18, 25-19, 25-22.
The Tamaraws, who reached the Final Four last year, provided a tough defensive wall at the net to frustrate the Blue Eagles’ spikers in their season-opening match.
It was a morale-boosting victory for the Tamaraws as it snapped the Blue Eagles’ 30-game winning run dating back two years ago.
Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines survived University of the East, 25-19, 25-13, 21-25, 16-25, 15-8. (Kristel Satumbaga)
