Fil-American skier Asa Miller made a respectable debut at the 2018 Winter Olympics after finishing 70th in the men’s giant slalom event in alpine skiing at the Yongpyong Alpine Centre in South Korea.
The 17-year-old Miller registered 1 minute and 26.70 seconds on his first run in the morning for 80th place and returned with a better time at 1:22.43 in the afternoon for a two-race total of 2:49.95.
Only 85 out of 110 competitors completed the first run, and 75 skiers in the second and final run.
Austrian Marcel Hirscher clinching the gold in 2:18.04, with Norway’s Henrik Kristoffersen (2:19.31) and France’s Alexis Pinturault (2:19.35) settling for silver and bronze, respectively.
Born and raised in Portland, Oregon to an American father and a Filipina mother, Miller’s family and friends had to set up a fundraising drive to compete in several races and qualify to the Olympics.
He took a three-week off as a senior student at Lincoln High School to focus on the Games.
