Turning up the heat down the stretch, visiting Batangas City pulled away from host Navotas for an 80-71 victory on Saturday night and a share of the lead in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Anta Rajah Cup at the Navotas Sports Complex.
Former pro Val Acuña led a balanced attack with 17 points while big man Jhaymo Eguilos banged in 11 points and 15 rebounds on top of two blocks for the Athletics, who settled the issue with a 17-7 run that shattered a 62-all count.
It was the fourth straight victory in as many starts for Batangas City, which joined idle Quezon City atop the 10-team field.
Former Far Eastern University standout Ron Dennison tallied a team-high 14 points off the bench while Letran guard JP Calvo collected 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds that all went for naught as Navotas suffered its second straight loss for an even 2-2 mark.
Earlier, pre-season champion Bulacan Kuyas stopped a three-game losing skid at the expense of Caloocan Supremos, 92-74.
Stephen Siruma and James Martinez combined for 29 points while burly center Jay-R Taganas hauled down 17 rebounds. (Jerome Lagunzad)
