Far Eastern University survived the late comeback of University of the East to post a 25-20, 25-17, 24-26, 25-22 win in UAAP women’s volleyball yesterday at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Lady Tamaraws rediscovered their touch in the fourth and held their ground firmly against the Lady Warriors’ challenge to snare their third victory against two losses.
The triumph tied them with Ateneo at third place.
FEU saw its 23-20 third-set lead vanish into thin air after Mary Ann Mendrez stepped up for UE, coming through with an off-the-block spike and a service ace that gave the Lady Warriors a ray of hope.
The Lady Warriors nearly pushed the game into a deciding fifth set but the Lady Tamaraws had other things in mind as they pulled away from a tight 19-18 lead.
Bernadeth Pons scored 21 points, all coming from the attack line.
UE, playing its first game under interim coach Rod Roque after Francis Vicente’s sudden resignation last Friday, absorbed sixth consecutive defeat.
In men’s play, FEU also emerged triumphant, crushing UE, 25-15, 25-16, 25-22, to extend its win streak to five games.
John Paul Bugaoan and Richard Solis led the Tamaraws with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
UE fell to its sixth straight defeat in as many matches.
La Salle, meanwhile, turned to Arjay Onia and Raymark Woo to beat Adamson, 25-20, 25-15, 24-26, 25-22.
Onia and Woo combined 41 points as the Archers evened their record to 3-3.
