President Duterte has left to the discretion of Congress whether or not to pursue a bill allowing divorce in the country.
Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said the President has declined to comment on the divorce bill and instead passed to Congress to make the decision.
“When I asked him what his current stand is, he said, ‘No comment.’ He leaves it to Congress,” Roque said during a Palace press briefing. “He said, ‘No comment,’ although he remains steadfast to be against abortion,” he added.
The House Committee on Population Recently approved a measure legalizing divorce in the country.
Under the bill, married couples can end their marriage for reasons, including abuse, infidelity, and irreconcilable differences.
At present, the country’s family code allows legal separation and annulment.
