The International Boxing Federation (IBF) is giving an award to Jerwin Ancajas for his spectacular performance in 2017 when the US-based governing body holds its 35th convention from May 28-June 1 in Saint Vincent, Italy.
Ancajas’ trainer-manager Joven Jimenez said esterday that for defending the super-flyweight crown thrice last year, “a ring will be given” to the Filipino champion.
After winning the title in 2016, Ancajas retained the title in 2017 against Jose Rodriguez of Mexico in Macau in January, Teiru Kinoshita of Japan in Brisbane in July and Jamie Conlan of Northern Ireland in Belfast in November.
Jimenez said it is paramount that Ancajas makes good on his mandatory defense against countryman Jonas Sultan in Fresno on May 26 since they are flying straight to Italy from California to attend the event.
Jimenez and Ancajas will be joined by US agent Sean Gibbons, who has become instrumental in the fighter’s meteoric rise.
Gibbons is closely allied with Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum, whose Top Rank Inc. signed Ancajas to a mouth-watering multi-fight deal.
Team Ancajas is set to leave for the US on May 15 while Team Sultan will depart on May 4. (Nick Giongco)
